From our Chairman, Sean Valigura:
This entire effort got started back in 2014 for me. I reconnected with an old friend on Facebook. We talked for a bit and got caught up on what we were doing and where we each were in life. Friend requests were exchanged and of course we started popping up in each other’s FB feeds.
About every other week or so, I would see photos and pics of him at what I learned were called Obstacle Course Races (or simply OCRs). You may have heard about Spartan Race, BoneFrog, Green Beret Challenge, Conquer the Gauntlet, Savage Race, Tough Mudder or other similar races. Well, he convinced me to give up competitive power lifting for a few months and go and do the Spartan Race in Austin, TX.
While exhausting physically, it was emotionally and spiritually fulfilling. I was hooked instantly by the community! While the race itself was fun and challenging, it was really the PEOPLE that made the experience SO rewarding. In the week after that race I began to look for my next geographically-close OCR. And, I found a Spartan Race in Dallas! Now, you need to understand that these races are never actually IN the announced city. They’re always outside of the major metropolitan area in a small, rural town. For example, the Austin race is actually IN Burnet, TX. And similarly, the Dallas race was actually being held IN Glen Rose, TX. Now, as a very proud Navy veteran with friends in Navy Special Warfare, that set off an immediate alarm in my mind. When I went to find the exact location and venue for the race, my fears were confirmed. The Spartan Beast in Dallas was actually being held at Rough Creek Lodge…the exact same property where US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and his best friend Chad Littlefield were shot and killed in February of 2013. I brought this up to the leadership of my racing team, The Lone Star Spartans, and they asked me to put on a tribute to Chris and Chad. Obviously, I accepted.
We’ve grown quite a bit in our 4 years of existence now. But, our goals have always been the same: #1 – to honor and pay tribute to Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield, #2 – Raise awareness for veteran’s issues, including PTSD. And, #3 – Raise money that we donate to veteran’s charities each year. Last year, with 0% overhead, we raised over $43,500 for fully vetted, 501c3 veteran charities.
This year, we’re splitting our proceeds evenly between:
Operation Enduring Warrior – (OEW) is a veteran-founded non‐profit 501(c)(3) whose mission is to honor, empower, and motivate our nation’s wounded veterans through a physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation. Our program helps participants overcome adversity and hardship through innovation, teamwork, and perseverance. This ultimately enables the lives of wounded veterans to go in directions they may have once thought were impossible. OEW is a completely volunteer run organization. Donations go directly towards operational support of the organization and its different programs.
The Combat Wounded Coalition – The (CWC)’s mission is to inspire our wounded warriors to Overcome. We accomplish this through direct programs and connections to other vetted organizations that support them through Pride, Power Purpose and Peace. Another CWC mission is to provide clothing modifications and Wounded Wear, a unique line of apparel for wounded warriors and patriots to support our wounded warriors. We also honor families of the fallen with opportunities to participate in events with our heroes.
The F7 Group – a nationally recognized 501(c)3 non-profit and White House designated “Champion of Change” that empowers and inspires Veterans, Women, and Youth through physical, mental, and spiritual health. Programs are designed that help Active Duty personnel and their families transition back into civilian life with training programs, seminars, and direct, one-on-one coaching.
